【NETEASE TECH】Future Science Prize Laureates: Sky-high Achievements Must Be Rooted in Down-to-earth Efforts

On November 18, Zhang Qifa, Zhou Qilin, Feng Xiaoming, Burn J. Lin and Ma Dawei accepted media’s interviews to express their feelings of being the laureates at the  2018 Future Science Prize Laureates Press Conference of Future Science Prize Ceremony & Future Forum (F2) Science Symposium.
Zhang Qifa, who was the 2018 Life Science Prize Laureate, said “It was a surprise to get the award because all of us work on rice, ordinary pieces in this high-end and sophisticated realm. Studies on rice have evolved by leaps and bounds in this century thanks to a large number of eminent scientists who command no less authority than me, so Li Jiayang, Yuan Longping and me just accept this prize on behalf of the scientists of this field and we believed that China's researches on rice will march on.” In order to get rid of hunger, their generation was driven by getting food which is rice exactly. They study on what genes are needed and what genes need to be adjusted on rice. Sky-high achievements must be rooted in down-to-earth efforts and the sky-high  achievements of rice researches all come from hard work based on paddy fields which involve plenty of beautiful stories. And Zhang said “As long as your research is based on your paddy field, you will get sky-high achievements.”
Ma Dawei, who took the 2018 Physical Science Prize said that he was surprised to know that the three laureates of Physical Science Prize were all researchers on catalyst. With great progress achieved in China's chemistry in the past 30 years, researches on catalyst can be of great significance to the material creation.
Feng Xiaoming, who was also recognized with the 2018 Physical Science Prize said he never thought about it that he could be the laureate when he received the call from Future Science Prize on September 8. And he indicated that they were creating something that is environmentally friendly and beneficial to well-beings of people. Next, they would work on the field where catalysts couldn’t work in the easiest and most economical way.
Zhou Qilin, another 2018 Physical Science Prize Laureate, said he was a young man returning to his hometown. At that time, the social trend was that knowledge changes destiny. Thanks to the policy of resumption of College Entrance Examination proposed by the former Chinese leader Teng Hsiao-ping, he seized the opportunity to go to university. The harder he learned about chemistry, the more he liked it. He thought what he got from chemistry was far more than what he just put in it and the prize should go to all the Chinese Chemistry researchers for they had done a lot in this field. Chemistry is a discipline characterized by numerous experiments, so they had invested greatly in this field, and the prize was a big stimulator for his team to continue their researches. Zhou said it was obvious that green chemistry was a focus because of requirements of green chemistry and the issue of atomic enthusiasm and he will still focus on catalyst.
Burn J. Lin, who won the 2018 Mathematics & Computer Science Prize, was informed that he was the laureate on Saturday morning. He thought this prize is valuable to promote the healthy competition in technology. Lin said, “we should persist with a clear goal and in a scientific and wise manner.”
