On the afternoon of November 2, Prof. Zhang Fusuo, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Dean of CAU Institute of Green Agricultural Development and Director of the National Institute of Green Agricultural Development, guested on the academic activity hosted by College of Resources & Environment (CRE) for the 120th Anniversary Celebration of HZAU and the 70th Anniversary Celebration of CRE. He delivered a report entitled “Green Agricultural Development Strategies and Challenges” at the first floor of the International Academic Exchange Center which attracted more than 200 teachers and students from different colleges. The report was presided over by Guan Huanda, Executive Vice-director of the Office of Science and Technology Development.
Prof. Zhang started his report with the analysis of high investment but low yield, low quality rate and commodity rate of major agricultural products and high cost in food production. He put forward that it was both challenge and opportunity for China at present to transform high-input and high-cost agriculture into environment friendly, sustainable and modern agriculture with high quality and high yield. Then he systematically expounded the thoughts, strategies and progresses of green agricultural development. Based on detailed data and typical cases at home and abroad, Prof. Zhang disclosed the heavy toll that three decades’ agricultural development have taken on the environment.
With such awareness, policy support and capital investment, technological innovation and technology promotion were adopted to increase the crop yield, efficiency in absorbing fertilizer and water as well as decrease the pollution in some typical areas in the past 10 years. China not only blazed a trail to solve problems in green production of agriculture, but also set an example in agriculture development in the world. At the end of his report, Prof. Zhang put forward a further vision and predicted the challenges in the future. He reported that green agricultural development needed new theory and technology to support, and the government should build a cross-disciplinary innovation platform based on multi-disciplinary for green agricultural development. Besides, China could implement the National Action of Green Development in Agriculture and lead the way of world agricultural development.
In his report, Prof. Zhang also shared his team research experience about the problems and characteristics of the utilization of nutrient resources in agricultural production in China. For nearly 20 years, they have been working in rural and farmland as their main research field. Their achievements have not only become the key supporting technology for National Soil Testing and Formula Fertilize Action, but also the driving force for green agriculture model with high yield and high efficiency as well as national fertilizer industry transformation and upgrading.
Over the past 10 years (2009-2018), Prof. Zhang and his team have published 9 papers in the world’s most influential journals (PNAS, Science and Nature), making the team one of the founders of 2020 Program of the United Nations Environment Programme and Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations. They have created a small science and technology college which makes it possible to explore new ways of agricultural technology popularization, the new reform ideas of scientific research system and higher education in talents training. Meanwhile, they have successfully established a new “No distance” model which consists of technology innovation, service for “Three Rural Issues” and talents cultivation with the union of farmers, enterprises and the government.
