On October 9th and 10th, Zhang Qifa, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, together with his team, investigated the "green rice and green aquatic products" industry in Jianli County and Qianjiang City. The delegation of investigators also includes heads and professors from the Institute of Science & Technology Development and the Research Institute of "green rice and green aquatic products" of HZAU, government leaders of Jianli County and Qianjiang City, and heads from other administrative departments.
Zhang and his team talked with local farmers to see whether the "green rice and green aquatic products" industry went on well. They checked the experimental progress on screening varieties of backbone parents of the "green rice and green aquatic products" rice at the "Liu Yingwen’s quality-assured grain" base, listened to the introduction of ratooning rice planting provided by the "grain queen"——Bi Lixia at the high-quality rice planting cooperative, and learned about the construction of the base of the Research Institute of the "green rice and green aquatic products" of HZAU. The delegation further investigated in detail the breeding and cultivation of crayfish at the 10,000-acre rice-crayfish joint production base of Hengdi Village, asking local farmers for information about rice planting and purchase as well as recycling of discarded pesticide packaging and waste plastic mulching film.
During the investigation, Zhang and his team held talks with representatives from both enterprises and cooperatives engaged in rice and crayfish farming, breeding, and processing. More than 10 entrepreneurs shared their experiences and offered suggestions for the "green rice and green aquatic products" industry.
Zhang considered the investigation fruitful, informative and problem-solving. In his view, the joint production of "crayfish and rice" is a harmonious and balanced system. It’s inevitable that in the future the total production of rice will fall, making it necessary to adhere to green development, so that the value of rice can be increased when "rice grown in a crayfish field" and "crayfish cultured in a rice field" are mutually promoted brands. In addition, he insisted that the relevant departments and professors in HZAU should learn from entrepreneurs through close contact and joint work to strengthen the "green rice and green aquatic products" industry.
