On May 15th to 18th, the Second International Conference “Insects to feed the world” (IFW2018) was held at Zhongnan Garden Hotel, Wuhan, co-sponsored by Chinese Society for Microbiology ( CSM ) and the Entomological Society of China, organized by the College of Life Science and Technology of HZAU and State Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbiology. It is the one of the academic activities held for celebrating 120th anniversary of HZAU.

As the potential source of human food and animal feed, insects have a quite high efficiency of food conversion owing to its high-quality protein, amino acid and vitamin. Insects contribute a lot to global food security. In May 2014, The First International Conference “IFW”was held by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The conference had made a great progress on the feasibility of mass rearing of insects to increase the availability of animal proteins in a more sustainable way.
The Second International Conference “IFW2018”attracted over 240 delegates of 38 countries from Asia, Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania.      
At the opening ceremony, some participants were invited to give speeches, including Zhang Xianlong, deputy headmaster of HZAU, Prof. Yu Ziniu of HZAU, Zhang Ruoguang, vice chairman of the Wuhan Association for Science and Technology, and Prof. Arnold from Wageningen University, who is the representative of the international advisory group.
Zhang Xianlong introduced our school’s history and development and sincerely invited the delegates to visit our campus and to make in-depth exchanges and seek mutual development with HZAU on the occasion of its 120th anniversary.
During the conference, seminars were held on the theme of insects in food and feed production systems, the psychology of insect consumption, the nutrition, processing and protection of edible insects, insect food safety legislation and policies.
Participants discussed key issues of collection, production, processing, nutrition, marketing, and consumption of edible insects and further explored the potential of edible insects for food and feed security.
On the afternoon of the 18th, the participants also visited the campus and some of the laboratories and conducted in-depth exchanges with scholars of related disciplines.
