Senior Investigator from WIPM gives academic report at HZAU

On April 17th, an academic report was delivered at the College of Sciences of Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU) by Tang Chun, a senior investigator at Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics (WIPM), Chinese Academy of Sciences. The report, titled “Dynamic Visualization of Protein Structure”, is part of the academic activities planned for the 120th anniversary of HZAU, attracting students and faculty from several colleges.

Dr. Tang started his report with brief introduction of the primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structures of protein. By presenting fascinating pictures, he explained the dynamics of protein structure, including chemical bond vibration, protein side chain movement, local motion, protein domain movement, protein-protein interaction and the working of protein machine. Tang explained how nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) works and introduced stable and nuclear-magnet-sensitive isotopes. He provided details of three applications of NMR in studying dynamic protein structure: the discovery of protein inhibitor and hit compound, dynamic interaction between ubiquitins, and ultra-weak protein-protein interaction.

At the end of his report, Tang Chun introduced the achievements made by WIPM and its scientific research infrastructure. He hoped that HZAU graduates will choose WIPM for advanced study.

As the director and distinguished research fellow of the Key Laboratory of Magnetic Resonance in Biological Systems of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tang Chun has been awarded the Outstanding Young Scientist by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and enrolled in Ten Thousand Talent Program. He is also a chief scientist on a research program from the Ministry of Science and Technology. His primary research is in the areas of biological nuclear magnetic resonance and integrated structural biology, and their applications. Dr. Tang has published 3 papers in Nature as the first author, a dozen in Nature series, PNAS, JACS, AngewChem, either as first author or corresponding author. Over 50 papers he published have received 3000 citations so far.
