HZAU Holds National Symposium on Phosphorus Chemistry

The National Annual Symposium on Phosphorus Chemistry was held at HZAU from 20th to 22nd in October. The theme of symposium was “Research, Application and Latest Advancement of Phosphorus in the fields of Chemistry, Chemical Industry, Material Science and Life Science”. Over 130 domestic experts attended the 2-day symposium.
The annual symposium was sponsored by Chinese Chemical Society (CCS), Chinese Society of Space Research and National Natural Science Foundation of China, hosted by HZAU and co-organized by Wuhan University, Central China Normal University, and China University of Geoscience (Wuhan). During the symposium, two lectures on “Exploration of Extraterrestrial Life” and “The Story of Time: Biological Clock” were given at the Shizishan Forum respectively. Zhao Yufen, an academician of Chinese Academy of Science, presented a consultation report on the strategic development of phosphorus science and conducted a round-table discussion. During the symposium, the sponsors, together with the China University of Geoscience (Wuhan), launched the large-scale science exhibition “Asking the Heaven -- the Solar System and Eight Planets Silhouettes”, which was well received.
The opening ceremony was held on the morning of 21st at the academic lecture hall on the 1st floor of the International Academic Exchange Center. Vice President Yao Jianglin of HZAU and Prof. Zhao Yufen from Xiamen University gave speeches consecutively, where they hoped that colleagues in all sectors could work assiduously, carry on the spirits of science, interdisciplinary research and cooperation, so as to promote the development of phosphorus chemistry and the progress of industries in China. Prof. Ding Kuiling, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, presided over the opening ceremony.
Prof. Fuk Yee Kwong from the Chinese University of Hong Kong delivered an English report on “Challenges to The Development of Cross-Coupling Reaction Between Adjustable and Accessible Phosphorus Ligands”. As for the phosphorus catalytic asymmetric reaction producing chiral heterocyclic and acyclic nucleoside compounds, Prof. Guo Haiming of Henan Normal University pointed out that this has become a hot topic in recent years, and that the chiral phosphoric acid catalyst derived from BINOL is a kind of chiral catalyst with strong acidity. After a short tea break, a speech about the research progress of Azomethine Yilide in asymmetric catalytic reaction was given by Prof. Wang Chunjing from Wuhan University, which resumed the second half of the symposium. Later, Prof. Zhang Caixiang from China University of Geoscience and Prof. Hao Gefei from Central China Normal University respectively introduced the phosphorus cycle in groundwater and surface water interaction zone and molecular design method based on fragments as well as the discovery of the lead compound of high selective pesticide. With regard to the phosphorus-catalyzed alpha-synuclein in ser129 and beta-amyloid in ser8 inducing the formation of different strains, Prof. Li Yanmei from Tsinghua University proposed that phosphorus is an essential element for living organisms.
Prof. Zhao Yufen concluded at the closing ceremony that the symposium presented a number of fantastic new findings, including the realization and new breakthroughs in the development and utilization of most primitive resources represented by phosphorus, and the achievement of recycling of phosphorus resources from animals and plants to environment. She expressed her gratitude for all participants. And she hoped that our new findings could go to the world, and raised tentative ideas on the design and the division of labor for the strategic development of phosphorus science.
