On September 21, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and the National Development and Reform Commission jointly released a selected list of universities and colleges, which will implement the country’s construction plan for world-class universities and first-class disciplines (“Double First-Class” initiative). Double First-Class is a plan conceived from 2015 and deployed in China since 2017 to develop world class universities and disciplines by the end of 2050. The full list of the sponsored universities and disciplines was published in September 2017, which includes 42 first-class universities (36 in Level A and 6 in Level B) and 465 first-class disciplines (spread among 140 universities including the first-class universities). Our university has five disciplines listed as first-class covering three research fields: agronomy, science and management, ranking 21th nationally in terms of the number of disciplines to be built and 2nd among the 95 universities with first class disciplines.
“Double first-class” initiative is a major strategic decision made by the Central Committee of the CPC and the State Council. On August 18, 2015, Overall Plan to Promote the Development of World-class Universities and First-class Disciplines was discussed and released by conference of the Central Leading Group for Comprehensively Continuing Reform. According to the Plan, universities and colleges can follow their own development and construction plan and determine the breadth of the first-class disciplines. Through the discussion of experts, study of the university and then the approval of the Ministry of Education, Biology, Horticulture and Crop Science, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Medicine and Agricultural Economics Management are selected as the first-class disciplines at HZAU.
