On November 21, the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan of Crop Science Seminar is held on the sixth floor of International Academic Exchanges Center. The seminar is presided by vice president Zhang Xianlong and 12 renowned experts on crop science at home and abroad discuss and give constructive advice on the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan of crop science in our university.
The 12 renowned crop science experts includes 6 academicians from Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE) like Gai Junyi from Nanjing Agricultural University and Yu Shuxun from Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences(CAAS) , Professor Zhang Jianhua from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Zhang Hong from Texas Tech University, etc. Two academicians from CAE in our university, namely, President Deng Xiuxin and Professor Fu Tingdong, and heads of College of Plant Science and Technology and of related departments also attend this seminar.
At the beginning of the seminar, President Deng Xiuxin, on behalf of our university, delivers a welcoming speech. He extends his wish that all experts and scholars give more advice so as to facilitate the improvement and adjustment of crop science in our university and to improve our management.
Later on, Cao Cougui, dean of College of Plant Science and Technology, introduces the current situation of crop science during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan. He also introduces the goal and guideline, major tasks and measures related to the construction of crop science. On behalf of the Cotton Team, Rice Cultivation Team and Genetic Improvement of Rapeseed Innovation Team respectively, vice president Zhang Xianlong, Prof. Peng Shaobing and Prof. Zhang Chunyu introduce the thirteenth five-year plan of their team respectively to the experts present at the seminar.
After hearing all the reports, the 12 experts take turns to give their personal advice on the Thirteenth Five-year Plan of crop science.
In terms of scientific research and industrial development, Academician Yu Shuxun suggests more efforts should be spared on the combination of breeding with cultivation technology and apply it to the service of local industries, backed up by the One Belt, One Road Initiative and Two Reduction Project. By citing his research on cotton, he points out that cultivation technology should be further put into practice and likewise, theories should be transformed into industrial productivity.
Academician Guan Chunyun proposes that research on agricultural informationization system be conducted and applied to cultivation management to promote agricultural modernization. Academician Chen Wenfu thinks that when developing a discipline, our attention should not only be attached to the quantity of SCI thesis but also to its supportive role to industrial technology.
Prof. Wan Jianmin hopes that research on wheat, maize and other major grains be strengthened and at the same time, young teachers conduct scientific research more often in the fields, increasing their competence of serving regions and industries.
Prof. Zhang Jianhua holds that we should adjust crop science to new situation and involve it in the research of national strategies of food security.
Academician Rong Yanzhao conceives that it’s imperative to further optimize and adjust the agricultural structure in transformation and upgrading of agriculture. He further extends his hope that cooperation between researches on crop production and husbandry and research on feed production and recycling of breeding wastes should be furthered.
Academician Gai Junyi stresses that future breakthroughs and development goal of a discipline or an industry should overshadow the pale listing of target numbers in the shaping of the plan and in the meantime, a sound and comprehensive evaluation system is needed to avoid evaluation by single factor in discipline construction.
As to the cultivation of talents, Academician Guan Chunyun hopes to attach more importance to the education of the macro agriculture, so as to foster neo-agricultural and practice-oriented talents with information-analyzing ability and broad vision.
The vice president of CAU Li Zhaohu holds, the challenge and opportunity we faced in building the top university and subject should be made use of, so as to make several subjects play a more important role in the global field through quality education. Meanwhile, he also expresses the wish to make some changes in the talent cultivation reform, for many universities in China highlight the cultivation of the students’ scientific research ability rather than the application in industry.
Prof. Sun stresses that the stimulation of students’ enthusiasm in starting a business should be in accordance with the transformation of the national economy and the Thirteenth Five-year Plan.
Academician Zhu Yingguo believes, the college has its own unique research plan featured by the close link between crop cultivation and production, the cultivation of students and the service of the modern agriculture.
Prof. Zhang Hong and Prof. Li Genyi introduce the agricultural production in U.S. and Canada respectively. They highlight the application of information technology into agriculture, with the hope to carry out research on precise agricultural production model based on farm-oriented production, and to adjust the existing agricultural training program so as to cultivate qualified and potential farmers who can adapt to the modern agricultural production.
Then, our vice president Zhang Xianlong suggests we should optimize the structure of crop science to better facilitate the industry.
Finally, Academician Deng Xiuxing concludes, the 13th Five-year Plan must be set up in the long run by centering on the state policy, the development of industry, and the agricultural demands, so as to find out what can be carried on or abandoned and what needs further construction. Afterwards, he points that, in order to be more adaptive, we should have a detailed analysis about the situation and focus on the employment of the students and the cultivation of more brilliant talents.
