On the morning of April 29, the conference room on the third floor of the main building of the School of Plant Science and Technology ushered in a special group of “the reunion of 80's and 90's Graduates”: Min Guanpei, 93 year old, Senior engineer of Hubei Provincial Department of Agriculture and cotton pest expert, and Su Qingshi, 90 year old , senior engineer of Hubei Plant Protection Station and rice disease expert, and He Shengjiang, 87 year old, the former stationmaster of Hubei Plant Protection Station and plant protection expert, and Zhou Maofan, 88 year old, retired Professor of Department of Plant Protection at Huazhong Agricultural University and plant pathology expert, and Professor Zong Liangbing, 86 year old, the former director of the Department of Plant Protection and entomology specialist, and Professor Zhu Lanbao, 82 year old, the former director of applied mycology laboratory of Department of PlantProtection, the former director and edible fungi expert, and engineer Wu Sijing, 87 year old and a number of other old alumni reunited in Shishan to hold a special Forum of “Reunion of 80's and 90's Graduates”, reminiscing about the creation and development of the Department of Plant Protection. The retired leaders in charge of the Party branch of the School of Plant Science and Technology also participated in the event.
At the forum, Mr. Min Guanpei, the 1942 alumnus and also one of the first five recruit students by the original Hubei College of Agriculture, recalled the entrance examinations, courses offered, and graduate assignments at that time.
According to him, the predecessor of the Department of Plant Protection was Agricultural Biology Department of Hubei College of Agriculture, and in 1942 it changed its name to the Department of Plant Diseases and Insect Pests and lasted till the 1952 national college adjustment. It was at that time Plant Diseases and Insect Pests Group of Agronomy Department of Wuhan University and Department of Plant Diseases and Insect Pests, Hubei College of Agriculture, Hunan Agricultural University, Henan Agricultural University, Department of Plant Diseases and Insect Pests of Guangxi University and Anhui University merged into the Department of Plant Protection of Huazhong Agricultural University.
Mr. Min Guanpei recalled that his college life was basically spent in Enshi, for the school was moved to Wufeng Mountain, Enshi in 1938 when the Japanese invaders approached Wuhan.
In the special period of years, despite of a lot of inconveniences in learning and life, the entire school teachers and students united as one, worked hard and perseveringly, overcame many difficulties and initially formed a relatively complete curriculum and test system, laying the foundation for the teaching and scientific research system of the later Department of Plant Protection.
At the same time, the hard years also left a lot of valuable spiritual wealth to the teachers and students.
The old alumni also listened to the introduction of the recent developments of plant protection by the leaders in charge of the School of Plant Science and Technology and the Department of Plant Protection, and visited their alma mater by car.
Comparing the present with the past, they not only felt their alma mater’s great changes, but also felt more proud of the achievements in the teaching and scientific research achieved by the Department of Plant Protection.
