Key points: 2016 Simulated International Academic Conference of Postgraduate Students of HZAU opened on the morning of 17th, April. As a special guest, Professor Luo Jie from the College of Life Science and Technology gave a special report. The conference had one main session and five parallel sessions arranged according to disciplinary characteristics. All conference participators spoke in English.
On the morning of 17th, April, 2016 Simulated International Academic Conference of Postgraduate Students of HZAU opened on the first floor of the Yifu Building. This conference was sponsored by the Graduate Union, Postgraduate Student Affairs Office and International College, and undertaken by Graduate Union.
As a special guest, Professor Luo Jie of the College of Life Science and Technology gave a special report titled “On the Importance of English Study in Postgraduate Students’ Scientific Research”. Professor Luo, taking his own experience of English study and overseas learning as examples, shared with the audience his transition from “being struggling” to “being natural”. He said that the current situation of English study among Chinese postgraduate students was enough booklore but inadequate practice. And he emphasized the importance of expressing, communicating and thinking in English. Meanwhile, he made some suggestions about how to read English academic periodicals. He said that the core of reading and understanding English academic periodicals was to master the main idea of an academic article and the key words of a paragraph.
The conference had one main session and five parallel sessions arranged according to discipline characteristics. All conference participators spoke in fluent English during the process of hosting, reporting, questioning and commenting, creating strong international and academic atmosphere.
Simulated International Academic Conference of Postgraduate Students is a significant part of English Festival of Postgraduate Student in HZAU. It not only provides an academic context of English communication, study and reflection to our postgraduate students, but also sparks their research inspiration and advances academic exchanges among postgraduate students from different subjects and research directions. What is more, the conference can help students perform with confident attitudes, appropriate behaviors and accurate languages at international conferences.
Introduction to Luo Jie: Luo Jie, professor and doctoral supervisor in the College of Life Science and Technology, mainly works on the studies of plant secondary metabolism and transcription regulatory network. In 2003, he visited Cathie Martin Laboratory of John Innes Center’s Metabolism Biology Department where he furthered his study as a post-doctoral researcher. He has worked on the study of rice metabonomics in the state key lab of crop genetic improvement in HZAU since 2008. He also undertook projects such as “863” and National Natural Science Foundation of China. In 2010, he was elected by the Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University. In recent years, he has published several outstanding articles in magazines such as Plant Cell, Plant J, and Nat Biotech.
