On the morning of Dec. 2, the demonstration meeting on establishing biomedicine-related disciplines was held in Room A202, the First Integrated Building. Members of the expert group from none-HZAU included Professor Zhou Xiang, Changjiang Scholar and dean of the College of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences, Wuhan University; Professor Zhang Xiaolian, National Outstanding Youth Fund Winner and head of the Department of Immunology in the School of Basic Medical Sciences, Wuhan University; Professor Li Man from Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology; Professor Liu Li from Cancer Research Center, Wuhan Union Hospital and other five distinguished experts. The meeting was attended by Professor Han Yongyou, executive dean of the Graduate School; Professor Feng Yongping, director of the Development Planning Department; team members of the College of Sciences and Technology and a dozen of experts in related fields from various colleges.
Professor Han Heyou chaired the demonstration meeting. Professor Wang Xuelu, dean of the College of Sciences and Technology reported the necessity and feasibility to set up three extra subjects: Immunobiology, Tumor Biology and Chemical Biology to the expert group from the aspects of biomedical education situation, scientific research and teaching foundation, research fields and teams, talent cultivation and future development planning etc. under the doctor program of primary discipline in Biology. According to the report, our school has enough reserve forces in these three research fields, including more than 10 experts with different prestigious academic titles; over 20 SCI papers with impact factor ≥9.0 published within five years; 18 related undergraduate and graduate students courses. Professor Feng introduced the background and development of biomedicine in HZAU.
After the report, the expert group fully affirmed the strategic significance of HZAU decision to develop biomedicine-related disciplines relying on disciplines advantages in biology and agriculture. They were convinced that the three disciplines have a predictable contribution on the university "double first-class"construction and the enhancement of comprehensive strength of discipline, considering their solid foundation, good teaching and research conditions, concise and clear research fields and feasible planning indicators. Members of the expert group proposed such questions as how to embody the characteristics combining with the discipline advantages; how to seek talents in the related fields to form a good team; how to realize the effective connection between the high starting point of the basic course and the elective course and research fields in the curriculum system; how to train students' international vision and cognitive ability in clinical practice .
At the end of the discussion, the expert group gave the opinions of the demonstration in all directions.
