Professor Liang Yunxiang, together with his team in HZAU, successfully screened out miraculous microorganisms which can control the pollution of lake and aquaculture water and can also deal with the wastewater from hoggery.
Liang, born in the rural area of Xiantao, Hubei Province, was admitted to HZAU and majored in Microorganism in 1978. He hardly knew anything about microorganism and even regarded it as a kind of harmful bacteria at that time. But decades later, he became the famous “Water Pollution Control” Professor with the microorganisms as his magic weapon.
The roaring Yangtze River and 166 lakes are the pride of Wuhan people for the city embraces abundant water resources. However, the lakes in Wuhan were continuously being polluted and encroached upon, most of which were poor in water quality and were undrinkable. “The smelly lakes and rivers” became Wuhan people’s pain in the neck.
“Water pollution was so fast and serious in China that the country was caught unprepared. At first we followed the ecological restoration approaches from the western countries, but the pollution was too serious to be recovered in the same way. Therefore, we managed to use microorganisms to improve the water quality first in the short run, and then steadily recover the ecological balance by vegetation and wetland in the long run. We think this is the right way for China to fight against water pollution.”Prof. Liang said.
Liang and his team spent nearly 20 years screening a variety of microorganisms that can clean water from the natural environment and cultivating them on a large scale to make standard microbial inoculum which can be put into the polluted rivers, lakes, industrial and aquaculture wastewater to clean the water.
His team has applied this technology to improving dozens of lakes and rivers in China in recent years. And he also used the magic microorganism to deal with the stink wastewater from hoggery at a low cost. What’s more, he replaced the antibiotics with microorganism to improve the quality of aquaculture water.
Liang was chosen in December 2016 as one of the 95 “City Partners” of Wuhan, a group of high-level talents from home and abroad who signed on an agreement to promote the innovative development of Wuhan City.
“Domestic aquaculture industry develops too fast with high density. In order to get a high yield, farmers put in feed at high proportion which may cause the water eutrophication. This often results in fish diseases to fight against which farmers have to put a lot of antibiotics in water.” Liang pointed out that this can not root out the fundamental problems, and the residual antibiotics would go into human body and do harm to people’s health. To solve the problem, the key is to improve the quality of aquaculture water.
“Magic microorganisms” are also effective in this case. Since 2000, Liang has been screening microorganisms that can clean water from soil and water, and finally found out the nitrifying bacteria, denitrifying bacteria, COD degrading bacteria and other efficient water purifying bacteria.
Professor Liang will further advance his research and hope to control water pollution more effectively in the future with his magic microorganisms.
