HZAU Holds the 1st International Symposium on “Big Data and Applied Bioinformatics of Ruminants”

From September 9th to 10th, the 1st International Symposium on “Big Data and Applied Bioinformatics of Ruminants” was held at HZAU, organized by College of Animal Science and Technology & Veterinary Medicine of HZAU (hereinafter CAST&VM). And International Joint Research Centre for Animal Genetics, Frontiers Science Center for Animal Breeding and Sustainable Production, and Shennongjia Science & Technology Innovation Center also sponsored the symposium.
More than 100 attendees from over 25 research institutes and enterprises attended the symposium, including the University of Alberta, the International Livestock Research Institute(ILRI), Tsinghua University, City University of Hong Kong, Zhejiang University, Northwest A&F University, Sichuan Agricultural University, Nanjing Agricultural University, Northeast Agricultural University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Prof. Guan Leluo at the University of Alberta served as the co-chairs of the symposium with Prof. Zhao Shuhong, dean of CAST&VM.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Xu Qingbiao, an associate researcher of CAST. Prof. Zhao first extended a warm welcome to the attendees and wished them a happy Teacher’s Day. Then she introduced the history and facts about the College, and hoped that this symposium would lead to new interdisciplinary cooperation between domestic and foreign researchers in ruminant research. Finally, she wished the symposium a complete success.

During the symposium, 13 scholars from Tsinghua University, City University of Hong Kong, Zhejiang University and other institutions delivered keynote presentations, sharing the latest advances in their research. The presentations covered a wide range of topics, including applications of big data analysis in virome, single-cell mapping of dairy cows and its applications, systematic genomic analysis of probiotics, host-microbe interactions for digestive health and efficient lactation in dairy animals, digestive tract health status of calves, rumen development and nutritional regulation in lambs, introduction to gut microbiome research, and exploration of lignocellulose degrading in buffalo rumen.

During the closing ceremony, Prof. Guan remarked on the richness and excellence of the presentations at the symposium. She emphasized that the attendees need to take action to address scientific challenges in animal husbandry through better integration of big data informatics and applied research.
