HZAU Holds 3rd Smart Fisheries Design Competition

The 3rd Smart Fisheries Design Competition of HZAU was held online. There were 13 teams of 48 participants from the College of Fisheries, the College of Engineering, the College of Informatics and the College of Plant Science & Technology (Smart Agriculture Major). The judges included Professor Gao Jian, Vice Dean of College of Fisheries, Professor Wang Chunfang and Professor He Xugang from the College of Fisheries, Professor Tan Hequn and Associate Professor Feng Yaoze from the College of Engineering.

Gao Jian stated in his speech that with the fusion of big data, artificial intelligence, biotechnology development and agricultural disciplines, the smart fisheries, which contained the technologies of precision aquaculture, visual management and smart decision-making, has brought unprecedented changes to the fisheries field. He hoped that the Smart Fisheries Design Competition would strengthen the students’ professional practical skills and promote the development of smart, automated and intensive fisheries.

The competition, hosted by Tan Hequn, included two tracks: smart fisheries system and smart fisheries equipment. During the competition, the reporters from 13 teams presented the design concepts, simulated operation process and demonstrate the finished equipment by video. Finally, in the smart fisheries system track, Qiao Haofeng’s work “Circulating Water Intelligent Feeding System” won the first prize. The second prizes were awarded to the work “Precision Vaccination System for Oral Fish Vaccines” by the team of Wang Hang from the College of Fisheries and the College of Plant Science & Technology, and the work “Smart Fisheries Traceability System” by the team of Jia Yihui from the College of Fisheries and the College of Informatics. In the smart fisheries equipment track, the work “Pneumatically-powered Automatic Feeding Machine” by Zhang Qing’s team from the College of Engineering won the first prize. The second prize were awarded to the work “Intelligent Automatic Oxygenating Equipment” designed by Yang Xipeng’s team from the College of Engineering and College of Fisheries and “Remote Monitoring Automatic Feeding System” designed by Huo Dongyan’s team from College of Engineering and College of Fisheries.

The judges then commented on the competition. He Xugang believed that the teams of the two tracks performed well and were able to learn the professional knowledge of other disciplines, which fully reflected the feature of multidisciplinary integration. He encouraged students to work hard and make more achievements. Wang Chunfang concluded that it was rare that the students from the four colleges were able to locate the key points in aquaculture and solve them by technology of smart fisheries. Feng Yaoze added that “Smart fisheries is an interdisciplinary subject and a very popular direction in the field of agricultural development. I believe that students will gain a lot from this competition no matter whether they win the prize or not. I hope they will take this competition as a starting point to contribute to the development of smart fisheries.”

Gao Jian expressed affirmation to the contestants from various aspects, such as project selection, design, engineering modeling and presentation. Gao emphasized that whether you got award or not, the competition itself was a good exercise. He summarized four features of the Competition: first, the theme of the competition was based on modern technologies such as Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and machine learning to solve problems; second, the contestants were in low grades, nearly half of the students were first and second year students; third, the competition fully reflected the multidisciplinary feature, with 6 teams were cross-college teams and 1 team was cross-university team among 13 teams; fourth, the theme of the competition was diversified, ranging from fresh water to seawater, from aquaculture to aquatic product consumption, and expanding from fish to crustaceans. He expected more students to participate in the competition in the future and all the participating groups could keep in touch and cooperate with each other, contributing to the transformation of unmanned, automated and equipped fisheries through the collision of ideas from different disciplines.
