On Nov. 29, the 7th International Symposium on Genomics and Crop Genetics Improvement - Genomic Breeding opened at HZAU. The symposium was co-hosted by the National Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Improvement (Huazhong Agricultural University), Molecular Breeding (a Springer-Nature journal), and Hubei Hongshan Laboratory. 30 scholars from 7 countries in related fields reported to over 10,000 participants.
As the chairperson, Prof. Zhang Qifa (academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), in his opening remark, gave warm welcome to the online and offline scholars. Zhang explained that due to COVID-19, the symposium was held physically at HZAU and also virtually on ZOOM.
International Symposium on Genomics and Crop Genetic Improvement was initiated and hosted by the National Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Improvement. Debuted in 2002, it was held for the 7th time in 2022. With its growing importance, the symposium has become a major event in genomics and crop genetic improvement after 20 years of development.
Furthermore, Zhang indicated that on Nov. 28, an editorial board meeting of Molecular Breeding was held. The journal editors and 30 scholars from the United States, Australia, Germany, and Japan were invited to deliver reports, with the hope that participants can benefit from this meeting.
On behalf of HZAU, Vice-president Qing Ping said he was very happy to meet old and new friends, and thanked all participants for their support. Qing pointed out that major progress in the genomics of crops achieved in recent years provides a large amount of valuable information on crop genetic improvement. The symposium will promote communication and cooperation by presenting and reviewing the latest progress in crop genomics and genome breeding. Furthermore, Qing gave an introduction to HZAU and expressed his belief that this event will promote the development of genome breeding, the field where HZAU will strengthen its scientific and technological cooperation.
The International Symposium on Genomics and Crop Genetic Improvement aims to promote communication and cooperation between Chinese and foreign experts by giving them a platform to discuss the latest progress in genomics and its application in crop genetic improvement.
The 7th International Symposium on Genomics and Crop Genetic Improvement - Genome Breeding was held at HZAU from Nov. 28 to 30. It focused on “functional genomics”, “crop biotechnology”, “genetic engineering”, “crop molecular marker-assisted selection breeding”, and “genome breeding”. It presented the latest progress in molecular and genome analysis of important traits in crops, new ideas and strategies for crop improvement, genome technology progress, and genome technology application in crop breeding through keynote reports, reports, and posters. The symposium aims to develop the biological seed industry globally and ensure food security by promoting academic communication and cooperation, and progress in science and technology.
This symposium is also one of the series of academic activities celebrating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the State Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Improvement (reorganized into the National Key Laboratory of Crop genetic Improvement in 2022).
