On Nov.14, an academic sharing on cotton development was held at HZAU, and Prof. Wang Maojun (the College of Plant Science&Technology of HZAU)was the invited young scientist. Under the guidance of the Hubei Youth Federation and the Hubei Youth Science and Technology Workers Association, it is hosted by the Communist Youth League Committee of HZAU. The seminar themed on "Shared Responsibility for Cotton Development", and Wang illustrated his commitment to scientific research and discusses cotton development with more than 30 students from home and abroad in it.
Wang first shared his personal experience in scientific research. He articulated why he chose bio-informatics as his major and how he determined to choose this research direction and goals."What cotton production needs most is the high-quality fiber."That's why Wang is committed to this field. Wang made a summary of his studies from his three research achievements. One, constructing the reference genomes of two cultivated cotton species and identifying the QTL of fiber quality. Two, revealing the subgenomic asymmetric selection of long spinnable fibers; Three, clarifying the regulatory role of dynamic DNA methylation and 3D genomic organization in fiber development.
In the light of the global model diagram of the interaction of different cotton chromatin, Wang explained the polyploidy and 3D genome recombination for students to better understand TAD recombination, TE amplification, 3D genome recombination of the three cotton genomes, DNA methylation dynamics, and transcription regulation during cotton development.
Wang suggested that "starting from the basic research is the best way to build confidence." Wang stressed his point by illustrating that he started from articles with low influence and gradually gathered more know-how in his research field. In a word, without years of hard work, his achievements and insights on many issues would be out of the question. Finally, Wang encouraged students to bravely pursue their dreams .
Questions kept popping out in the last Q&A section. YEHIA IBRAHIM MANSOUR ABOUSEIF (Egyptian doctoral candidate from the the College of Plant Science&Technology of HZAU) pointed out that although he is born in Egypt, another major cotton producer in the world, his knowledge of cotton has been expanded by this event. He hopes that HZAU will have more international academic exchanges in the near future.
