Prof. Lan Caixia: The First Chinese Winning Carlotta Award for Female Researcher

Prof. Lan gave a report at the International Congress “From Seed to Pasta IV”.

 On the afternoon of Oct 27, the 4th International Symposium “From Seed to Pasta” was held in Bologna, Italy, at which Professor Lan Caixia (College of Plant Science & Technology, HZAU) won Carlotta Award 2022. Due to the Pandemic, Lan failed to attend the awards ceremony. At the invitation of the organizing committee, Lan delivered an online report named “Rapid cloning and functional gene analysis for a leaf rust resistance locus in durum wheat” .
Promoted by the Italian Institute of Technology and the European Research Infrastructure METROFOOD-RI, “Carlotta Award 2022” second edition is sponsored by the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas(ICARDA), the Wheat Initiative International Program, and European Association for Research on Plant Breeding (EUCARPIA). In honor of her outstanding contribution in wheat breeding improvement, the prize initiated in 2018 on the 150th anniversary of Carlotta Parisani Strampelli’s (wife of Nazareno Strampelli, Italian geneticist and breeder) birth, dedicated to giving research the proper recognition and, more importantly, to send a positive signal to young women researchers engaged in wheat and other cereals' genetic improvement. Two thematic areas are included: (A) wheat genetics, genomics, and breeding; (B) sustainable wheat production for food security, food quality, and safety, durum wheat-pasta value chain. The first-class (1 winner) and second-class (2 winners) prizes are set up respectively in the two areas. This year, 2 first-class, 2 second-class, and 4 special mentions were awarded among the candidates from 13 countries including China, USA and Canada. Lan won the first-class prize in thematic area A.    
As a professor and doctoral supervisor of College of Plant Science & Technology, HZAU, Lan is also the winner of 2011 Jeanie Borlaug Women in Triticum Award, WIT, and the executive director of the 6th Council of China Association of Agricultural Biotechnology. From 2011 to 2018, she engaged in the wheat disease resistance breeding and application in the global wheat program of CIMMYT, and participated in the breeding of 30 new wheat varieties, which have been approved and introduced in nine countries including Egypt, India, Mexico, etc. And six of the new strains have undergone the regional winter wheat variety trials in Hubei Province. Lan has published more than 50 academic papers in collaboration with experts from home and abroad, 3 monographs, won 2 national invention patents, and lead 5 domestic and international research projects, including the National Key R&D Program for Young Scientists for the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025) and International (Regional) Cooperation and Exchange Program.
