On behalf of the university, Li Zhaohu extended warm welcome to the attendees and expressed the sincere gratitude for their constant concern and support towards the development of HZAU’s related disciplines. He pointed out that healthy soil plays a significant role in terms of ecological civilization, food safety, rural revitalization, and the achievement of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. And soil chemistry is very much an active field of study in China, because it meets national needs and keeps up with the international frontier. Li hoped this symposium would herald a more glorious future for soil research, helping make greater contributions to the implementation of national strategy and the sustainable development of green agriculture.

Gao Yanzheng stressed that as a basic sub-discipline of environmental earth sciences, soil chemistry has gained much important progress by integrating with other disciplines such as biology, geoscience, mineralogy and environmental science, and played a positive part in the sustainable development of green agriculture. He hoped to further promote the development of soil chemistry and enrich its theoretical and technical system through the symposium, leveraging its technology to support low-carbon, green and sustainable development.
After the opening ceremony, professors from seven universities including Peking University, Zhejiang University delivered keynote speeches respectively. 24 conference reports were given in the main venue, along with 3 thematic sessions focusing on “Soil Biochemistry and Soil health”, “Transformation of Soil Organic Matter and Ecological Mediation” and “ Soil Environmental Chemistry and Pollution Control”. Furthermore, 4 postgraduate academic forums were held to provide the students with a platform to demonstrate their academic achievements, at which 60 postgraduates gave academic reports and 22 made poster presentations.
Professor Cai Peng (associate dean of the College of Resource & Environment, HZAU) hosted the closing ceremony. Professor Li Hang (deputy director of the Soil Chemistry Committee) and others presented awards to the postgraduate winners for their outstanding academic reports and poster presentations. Director Gao Yanzheng spoke highly of the symposium in his speech. He mentioned that the symposium not only attracted more representatives from broader fields, which benefits the development of soil chemistry, but also diversified the future of the discipline due to its distinct theme and substantial content.
It is also confirmed that the 2023 symposium would be organized by Ningbo University.
