National Key R&D Project Led by HZAU Kicks off in Wuhan

The project kick-off meeting on “Technology and Application on Capacity Improvement of Red Yellow Soil Slope Farmland and Low-and-middle-yielding Paddy in the Middle and Lower Reaches of Yangtze River” was held at HZAU on April 2, 2022. Experts and scholars across the country attended the meeting online and off-line. The implementation plan of the project and its research agenda were presented and discussed at the meeting.

The project, with 9 institutions and universities involved, is led by HZAU, and 11 scholars across the country including Academicians Zhang Qifa and Fu Tingdong serve as consulting experts. It is embedded in the key project “Technology Innovation on Capacity Improvement of Arid and Semi-arid Areas in Northern China and Red and Yellow Soil Regions in the South” under the 14th Five-year Plan of National Key Research and Development Program of China.

The middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River is located in subtropical area with humid climate and double or triple cropping a year. It covers for about 20% arable land of China with its unique red, yellow and paddy soil, making itself an important grain producing area. This project will focus on the following aspects: improving slope farmland concerning barren and acidified red-yellow soil, shallow cultivated layer and frequent seasonal drought; ameliorating cold water immersion, toxicity of reducing substances, low efficiency and easy loss of nutrients of paddy soil; developing breakthrough products and technologies by overcoming major barriers to improve production capacity of farmland; integrating technologies of stress-resistant cultivars selection with efficient cultivation and planting modes. In addition, efforts will be made to build a comprehensive mode of regional and classified management and set up a platform for common interest of Industry-University-Research-Promotion-Practice, so as to achieve high-efficiency of regional agricultural production and industrialization of feature products.

The project PI, Tan Wenfeng, a professor from College of Resources and Environment, HZAU, said that increasing the production capacity of low-and-middle-yielding farmland was an important way to strengthen national food security. Grain production will increase by 20% once farmland fertility is improved with a higher level. The project will focus on developing key technologies for overcoming barriers in low-and-medium yielding fields and making breakthrough in products R&D. Besides, actions will be taken to improve soil structure, build a fertile cultivation layer, and construct a comprehensive technology model with improved eco-efficiency and productivity.

The project will generate more than 10 technologies for ameliorating red and yellow soil nutrients in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and advancing quality and efficiency of low-and-medium-yielding paddy. More than 10 soil improvement products and their supporting equipment will be developed. 5-8 stress-resistant cultivars will be cultivated, and 5-8 regional capacity improvement technology models will be provided. In addition, 6 demonstration bases will be established. The quality of farmland will be raised to 1 or 2 levels higher in the core demonstration area and thus grain production will increase by more than 20%.
