Prof. Zhou introduces the current seedling conditions and proposes field management measures
On February 23, a meeting on spring field management in the main wheat producing areas of Hubei Province was held in the rapeseed fields of the National Modern Agricultural Demonstration Park in Xiangyang City. Professor Zhou Guangsheng from the College of Plant Sciences & Technology of HZAU, together with the host of Longshang Channel, gave a special class on spring field management of rapeseed. The class was live webcast through 7 platforms, including Xuexi.cn, China Media Group Mobile, with the total number of viewers exceeding one million. Zhang Wenbing, Vice Governor of Hubei Province and the heads of relevant departments watched the live telecast online. Over 100 people watched the live streaming on site, including Xiao Changxi, Deputy Director of Hubei Province Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, leaders of Xiangyang city, heads of agricultural departments, local agricultural technicians and farmers’ representatives.
With this lecture using rapeseed field as the classroom, Prof. Zhou comprehensively introduced the situation of rapeseed seedlings in the whole province based on the previous investigations, and gave targeted tips for spring field management of rapeseed in Hubei Province, providing specific guidance on the spring field management for villagers.

During the meeting, Prof. Zhou briefly introduced the overview of rapeseed production in Hubei Province and Xiangyang City. As one of the most important provinces for rapeseed production in China, Hubei Province has maintained a perennial planting area of about 17 million mu (1mu=0.0667 hectares), and it has been the largest producer of rapeseed in China for 22 consecutive years until 2015, contributing to the supply of edible oil in China. Located in China’s north-south transition zone, with a moderate climate for rapeseed production, Xiangyang is a high-yielding, high-quality rapeseed producing area in China, with an average per unit yield of 197 kg in 2021, higher than the province’s average of 150 kg.
Prof. Zhou introduced, type I and type II of seedlings accounted for about 85%, and type III accounted for about 15% in Hubei Province. At present, with the rising temperature, it is the budding stage of rapeseed, a critical period for rapeseed reproductive growth and nutritional growth, which would greatly influence the number of rapeseed corns and stalk quality. If the productive shelf is well built, the high-yielding rapeseed with lodging resistance can be achieved.
In view of the current climate characteristics and the seedling conditions in Hubei Province, Prof. Zhou said the rapeseed field management in spring should be mainly carried out from three aspects: First, with clever application of fertilizer and shelf, classified management should be carried out for different seedlings. Second, clearing ditches and drainage so as to promote root development and prevent early failure of rapeseed. Third, carrying out sclerotinia prevention and control in advance. With timely and proper spring field management, it is expected to make rapeseed yield increase of 30 to 50 kg per mu.
In 2021, rapeseed oil industry is included in the “Ten Key Agricultural Industry Chain in Hubei Province”. Provinces, cities and counties worked together to drive the synergistic development of rapeseed oil whole industry chain. As a member of the Hubei rapeseed oil industry chain expert group, Prof. Zhou believes that the provincial government attaches great importance to the development of rapeseed industry, with clear measures and effective protection. In the lately issued Document NO.1 of the Central Government, it is also clearly pointed out the importance of “developing rapeseed in winter idle fields in the Yangtze River basin” which is also very good news for the development of rapeseed industry in Hubei Province. He firmly believes that under the strong leadership of the provincial government, Hubei Province will seize this opportunity for development, in response to the national call to vigorously develop rapeseed, to achieve harvest both in grain and oil.
