On September 30, Zhou Shiyue, a student from the College of Animal Science and Technology & College of Animal Medicine, went to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. As a member of the “UNV-CYVA Chinese Youth Volunteer Overseas Volunteering Program”, she will work at the UNDP Mongolia Office for six months.
It is reported that since 2019, Chinese Young Volunteer Association (CYVA) and United Nations Volunteers (UNV) have jointly launched the “UNV-CYVA Chinese Youth Volunteer Overseas Volunteering Program”. In 2021, our university was selected to this program(second batch) together with other 13 universities, including Tsinghua University, Nanjing University and Wuhan University. Zhou, a volunteer of Benyu Volunteer Team in HZAU, is the first international volunteer deployed by the Chinese Youth Volunteer Overseas Volunteering Program against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, and first youth volunteer to work in Mongolia since the initiation of the program.
▲Zhou took part in the preparation training.
This August, the second cohort of volunteers received assignment preparation training in Shanghai, and 23 international UN volunteers were selected to serve either online or offline in 14 countries around the world.
At the training and departure ceremony, Zhou said, “Volunteerism has no borders. I always hope that I will go abroad one day and display the spirit of Chinese youth volunteers. When I learned that CYVA and UNV will deploy volunteers to organizations of the UN, I did not hesitate to apply and was lucky enough to be selected. And I’ll work hard to spread Chinese culture and tell Chinese story, and enhance the image of China with the passion of youth.”
▲Zhou spoke at the departure ceremony.
It is the first time for HZAU to join this program. To provide better support for Zhou, HZAU set up a special team under the guidance of CYVA. It will coordinate different departments concerned to handle Zhou’s academic, foreign and funding affairs. Furthermore, the team provided safety education before departure and online or offline daily management service.
Winter in Mongolia is bitterly cold but incredibly beautiful, with the Tuul river winding through Ulaanbaatar. As a dream chaser, Zhou has been ready for the harsh climate and expressed her belief that the six-months volunteer service in Mongolia will enhance her sense of social responsibility, global vision and international competitiveness.
“I will bear in mind the earnest wishes of General Secretary Xi Jinping in his reply letter to Benyu Volunteer Service Team of HZAU. I’ll promote volunteerism of dedication, friendship, mutual help and progress. I am sure to serve with respect and sincerity, and work hard with love and passion.” Zhou expressed her commitment.
