On May 24, the Report Meeting on Entrepreneurship of College Students for Rural Rejuvenation in Hubei Province was held in Wuhan Technology and Business University (WTBU). In the meeting, three young men from Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU), Wuhan Institute of Shipbuilding Technology (WIST) and WTBU respectively shared their stories of entrepreneurship, raising young people’s awareness that there are bright prospects for rural rejuvenation.
The teacher and student representatives from some universities of Hubei province attended the meeting, which was held by WTBU and sponsored by College Graduate Career Center and College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Club of Hubei Province.
Turning little water caltrop into a big industry is the good expectation of Peng Da, a HZAU 2018 graduate student majoring in rural development. In 2016, as a sophomore, he and his social practice team discovered in a research that the water caltrop in Tianjinghu Village, Xishui County, was of excellent quality. However, the villagers didn’t draw a large income from growing water caltrops. Therefore, he and other several graduate students joined with local business partners to set up a team and then started exploring poverty alleviation through developing industries. With the technical support of experts and scholars, his team has helped the local villagers develop ready-to-eat water caltrops, water caltrop vermicelli, water caltrop wine, water caltrop cream and so on. From selection and breeding, planting, harvesting, processing, selling and others, the team tried their best to promote the development of the local water caltrop industry. He said emotionally, “I hope that more students will devote themselves to rural rejuvenation.”
“Small villages, big dreams.” This is the personal feeling of Chen Yang, a graduate student from WIST. In 2017, Chen returned to his hometown Hongan and worked as a college student village official. In Tieshan Village, he led the villagers to grow sweet potatoes, tea-oil trees and other plants in large areas. Moreover, he expanded the marketing channels through developing e-commerce and live streaming. Honestly speaking, he said that in the process of entrepreneurship he also came across various difficulties including natural disasters, lack of professional technology and understanding from his families, and blocked marketing channels. Despite all hardships, he gained much more from that. He said that rural rejuvenation needed more people to take part in, and he also hoped that with the joint efforts of all sectors of society, the countryside could cradle more young people’s dreams.
Yuan Dapeng, a 2007 graduate of WTBU, after working many years in the first-tier city, came back to his hometown to start up his own business. He shared his experience and feelings with the college students and told them: “Big cities are not the only choice for you when choosing a career or establishing businesses. The countryside can also provide a stage for you to realize your dreams.”
