30 International Students See China’s Victory Against Poverty in Huangmei County, Hubei Province

With the theme of “To know China, perceive China and appreciate China”, the Graduate School of HZAU organized 30 international students to conduct field trips in three villages of Huangmei County that is located in the east end of Hubei Province on April 26. The international students have witnessed the achievements of China’s poverty alleviation and success of China’s rural development through on-the-site investigation, which deepened their affection for HZAU as well as their affinity with China.

30 international students visited a series of places during this journey, such as Hubei Xingxiuniang Ecological Garden, tea base, vegetable base in Sunba Village, Qingshanlvshui Ecological Garden in Youpujie Village, a river landscape belt, etc. They also went to Youpu Village Central Primary School, watching the training of a student chorus that is supported by HZAU.

They all exclaimed in delight at the brand-new look in the village featuring row upon row of residential houses and distinctive industrial bases, and then could not help smiling on the thriving view of the new countryside. They learned that HZAU has been sending task forces to Youpujie village for many years, and with the help of them, village roads that were once muddy have been renovated; the stream has become wide and clear; water, electricity and Internet services are now fully available to the villagers; technology-supported industries are thriving; the income of villagers has increased year by year and all poor households have been lifted out of poverty. After knowing all the efforts our university has made to help develop the village, the international students were sincerely being proud of being a HZAUer. “China’s rural area is developing rapidly. With the beautiful scenery around, we feel as if we were walking into a painting when conducting a field trip here,” they said. “This trip is an unforgettable experience for us.” The international visitors realized the efforts made by the Chinese government to overcome poverty and build beautiful countryside. Aware of the cooperation model between Chinese universities and local governments for the development of poverty-stricken areas, they thought China set a good example for their own countries in the area of poverty relief. “I’d like to tell my families and friends what has happened here,” they added.

Li Xiaoyong, deputy director of Huangmei Poverty Alleviation Office, and Cai Ye, deputy head of township in Kuzhu Town, respectively introduced the local targeted poverty alleviation and rural revitalization in Huangmei County and Kuzhu Township. Tu Juncai, leader of HZAU’s task force, presented the efforts of his team and the development and changes of Youpujie Village in the past five years. Hu Wen from the International Student Management Office of the Graduate School said that the education of international students in HZAU adheres to the road of connotative and high-quality development and it attaches great importance to practical education so as to improve the quality of higher education. Hu claimed through its efforts in poverty relief, China has not only eliminated absolute poverty in its vast land, but also provided China’s solution to the world poverty. “These 30 international students who came to Huangmei County today had stayed on campus during the epidemic and experienced the whole process of Wuhan’s fighting against the COVID-19. They have witnessed Chinese people’s strong spiritual power when fighting against the epidemic. And now they are seeing China’s another victory — a great victory in the battle against poverty,” Hu added. “All of these will help international students understand China in a deeper and more comprehensive way, feel the superiority of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics, and at the same time deepen their love for HZAU as well as their affinity with China.”
