The Model of “Rice-growing, land-reutilization and rape-planting” Is Highly Appreciated

“Reap rape and change into green fertilizer”, Fan Chengmi said with ecstasy, a farmer from Jiupu village of Qinchun county, Hubei province. Here, 1600 mu (about 107 hectares) rape was being furrowed as green fertilizer. The model “rice-growing, land-reutilization and rape-planting” was well received by local farmers.

On March 30th, with the joint efforts of HZAU (Huazhong Agricultural University), Hubei Rape Office and local agricultural departments, a symposium on the topic of technology of no tillage and aerial seeding of multifunctional rape in reclaimed rice field was held in the village. On-ground rape with output of 2,278 kilograms per mu (around 185 kg per hectares) can be used as fodder while on-ground and under-ground rape with output of 3,472 kilograms per mu (around 231 kg per hectares) can be utilized as green fertilizer of reclaimed rice field.

With an area of 1,600 mu and unit output of 3.47 tons , the land can capitalize on 5,552 tons green fertilizer which is essential for further reclaimed rice.

The technology of no tillage and aerial seeding of multifunctional rape in reclaimed rice field is that rape seeds will be planted via UAV after reaping reclaimed rice in the first year, and the reap will be plowed into green fertilizer before the second-year breeding. This technology is also called “rice-growing, land-reutilization and rape-planting” model, exploring how to breed reclaimed rice, to expand the multifunctional use of rape and to realize smart agriculture like aerial seeding.

Prof. Fu Tingdong from HZAU, member of Chinese Academy of Engineering observes that, rape is taking on a new look in the new era, which gives top priority to producing oil and takes into consideration local condition along with its multifunction. It can not only improve farmer’s income, but construct beautiful village and facilitate the implementation of rural revitalization strategy. Sowing rape seeds aerially in fallow winter will strengthen fertility of reclaimed rice field and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers. It is an effective attempt to save crops in the field with technique.

Experts declare that this technology is not only of great significance for soil fertility promotion, nitrogen and carbon stability, soil improvement, organic enrichment and microorganism diversity, but of major value in the event of being free from fertilizer dependence and restoring eco-environment. This model has generated financial benefits, guaranteeing farmers higher income and yields.
