The Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced the list of the fifth “typical programs of targeted poverty alleviation among MOE-affiliated higher education institutions (HEIs)”. The project “Advocating Yugong Spirit in a New Era, Paving Hopeful Path to Shake off Poverty” submitted by HZAU was selected into the list. It’s the third time for HZAU to win the selection.
On Sept. 9 and 10, the Development Planning Department under MOE held a competition to select typical programs of targeted poverty alleviation in Yangling county, Shaanxi province. 75 universities directly under the MOC participated in the event, and 12 typical projects were selected from 70 competitors after on-site display, voting and selection.
The submitted project of HZAU firstly introduced the story of a village Party secretary named Wang Guangguo from Jianshi County, who organized his villagers to build the road in the mountain successfully and led them to a prosperous life. Focusing on the building of system for poverty alleviation, this project casts new light on “Yugong Spirit” in the new era---" firm faith, respect for science, concerted efforts and perseverance”. The project endeavored to train technicians in certain industries, motivate participation in social service programs, and improve educational standards to alleviate poverty. After several years’ implementation of projects, rural residents have seen an increase of their income and dropped poverty rate due to the growth of kiwifruit and other industries in Jianshi County. Jianshi County has fully got rid of poverty as scheduled in April this year.
The MOC later will focus on the publicity of typical projects, and give certain financial support to the selected universities for the follow-up implementation of the projects and a broad scale demonstration.
