HZAU is the first prize winner of 2019 Scientific and Technological Progress Award of Science Research Famous Achievement Award in Higher Institution. The awarded project, Collaborative Optimization System and Application of Rice Production of Climate-Soil-Crop in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River, has been accomplished with HZAU as the First Principal Unit and HZAU’s Prof. Cao Cougui as the First Principal Person. Since the “12th Five-Year Plan”, HZAU has been awarded 37 first prizes in Scientific and Technological Achievement Award at Provincial and Ministerial levels (Natural Science).
The project focuses on the sustainable development of green high yield, and on the collaborative optimization of climate-soil-crop. Prof. Cao’s team aims at addressing the problems of rice production in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, namely, low matching degree between planting pattern and annual climate resource, decreased cultivated land quality, and high greenhouse gas emissions. A comprehensive quantitative index system has been established after 14 years joint research. This system is designed for optimal allocation of light and temperature of rice production in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Moreover, the researchers have innovated the key technology of highly efficient allocation and utilization of annual light and temperature, and revealed the mechanisms for the coupling cycle of soil carbon-nitrogen regulating carbon emissions, and for fertilizer and water utilization. Prof. Cao’s team has also integrated key technologies, such as straw returning, no-tillage or minimum tillage, water-saving irrigation, reduction and deep placement of nitrogen fertilizer, reduction of annual application of phosphorus fertilizer, and straw incorporation substitute for kalium fertilizer. Six technological models of climate-soil-crop collaborative optimization for rice production in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River have been established, including the entire process mechanization of wheat-rice, the double direct seeding and no-tillage of rape-rice, the maize-rice rotation farming, the double cropping rice of early indic and late japonica, and another two models. These research achievements have been applied in five provinces in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, which have significantly contributed to the increased yield and efficiency, and the reduced input and emission, promoting the green transformation of regional rice production, and reaping dramatic economic, social and ecological benefits.
